The Mystery of the Yellow Room
One of the earliest and most celebrated locked-room puzzles, Gaston Leroux’s novel first appeared as a serial in 1907. Mademoiselle Stangerson, daughter of a famous scientist, is found savagely beaten in a chamber bolted from the inside, with no way the attacker could have entered or escaped. The young reporter Joseph Rouletabille, barely eighteen and armed with relentless logic, takes up the case against the seasoned detective Frederic Larsan, and the two men arrive at very different conclusions. Leroux plays scrupulously fair with the reader, laying every clue in plain sight before delivering a solution that startled a generation of mystery writers.
