About this book
The Nature of Animal Light surveys organisms that produce light, with a classification showing the distribution of luminous forms in the plant and animal kingdoms. The survey identifies at least 36 animal orders containing one or more forms known to produce light, while several other orders contain species whose luminosity is doubtful.
The discussion of respiration cautions that an experiment involving portions of a mushroom has never been repeated and that differences in respiratory rate may have causes besides luminescence. The text says that rapidly respiring plant tissues can produce considerable heat without being luminous. An account of Beijerinck's work reports that Bacterium phosphorescens could multiply without oxygen but would not luminesce under those conditions.
