The New Avatar and The Destiny of the Soul is a Theosophical treatise by Jirah Dewey Buck (1838-1916), the Cincinnati homeopathic physician who served for decades as a senior figure of the American Theosophical Society. The book sets out Buck’s account of the Theosophical doctrine of avatars, the cyclic descent of higher spiritual beings into incarnation, and the long arc of the human soul through successive lives. Buck draws on H.P. Blavatsky’s Secret Doctrine, on Eastern scriptural sources in translation, and on Christian mystical writing, and addresses the book to general American readers rather than to internal Theosophical audiences.
