The Open Gate is an 1887 one-act domestic drama by Charles Haddon Chambers (1860-1921), the Australian-born playwright who made his career on the London stage. First produced at the Comedy Theatre, the short piece belongs to his apprentice years before The Tyranny of Tears established him among the leading West End dramatists of his generation. Curtain-raisers like this opened the Victorian theatrical evening, and surviving texts preserve a vanished playgoing custom. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
