The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm

The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm presents the early Grimm corpus collected by Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859), the German philologists and folklorists whose Kinder- und Hausmärchen reshaped the European understanding of the folk tale. The brothers gathered stories from peasants, household servants, and middle-class informants in Hesse and along the Rhine from 1806 onward, and issued the first volume in 1812. This edition presents the tales in a form close to the early collection, before the heavy literary reworking that Wilhelm Grimm applied across successive editions through 1857. The Original Folk and Fairy Tales restore some of the rawness, violence, and regional voice that later editions softened for child readers.
