About this book

R. A. Torrey builds his discussion of the Holy Spirit around biblical passages and their meaning for Christian life. Published in 1910, the book moves through questions of personality, divinity and the Spirit's relationship to the Father and Jesus Christ. Its opening examines knowledge, feeling and will as signs of personality, using scriptural references to develop the argument. Later chapters address teaching, prayer, service and changes in a believer's character.

The practical emphasis becomes especially clear in the discussion of spiritual sonship. Torrey describes trust in God as a Father and connects that trust with faith, obedience and guidance by the Spirit. The chapter structure gives readers a way to follow particular doctrinal questions while also tracing their place in daily worship. For those studying Christian teaching on the Holy Spirit, the book offers a sustained example of interpretation joined to personal religious experience.
