About this book

A job offer aboard a wealthy friend's yacht gives seventeen-year-old mechanic Mart Judson an unexpected chance to use his wireless license. His first obstacle is simply getting past the first officer and onto the Seamew. Once aboard, he learns that Captain Hollinger plans to leave San Francisco for the Malay coast, combining a search for gold with a hunting holiday. Mart's friendship with Bob Hollinger brings two boys from different circumstances into the same adventure.

Elliott Whitney's juvenile novel mixes shipboard friction, treasure prospects and the uncertainties of unfamiliar waters. In a lagoon, brilliant coral and fish give way to the sight of an enormous black fin, while a seaman's alarm hints that the shark carries a reputation beyond its size. Readers interested in early adventure fiction will find practical talk about boats, radio work and weapons alongside the boys' eager, sometimes impatient responses to danger.
