About this book

Tortuga and the Spanish Main anchor this historical account of buccaneers, their voyages and their attacks on coastal settlements. The opening traces the author's service with the French West India Company and his later connection with pirate society. Chapter headings follow Henry Morgan and other raiders through expeditions against Spanish towns, while separate sections describe how crews equipped their vessels and arranged their voyages. George Alfred Williams edited and illustrated the 1914 edition presented here.

The middle excerpt follows Spanish preparations to recover St. Catherine. Ships, provisions and reinforcements must be assembled before rival claims to the island lead to negotiations and exchanges of gunfire. Those practical details give readers interested in maritime history a view of the resources behind colonial conflict. The account also records cruelty toward captives, making its treatment of daring raids and celebrated leaders a subject for critical reading alongside its descriptions of life at sea.
