About this book
The Private Life of the Romans is by Harold Whetstone Johnston, Professor of Latin in the Indiana University. The preface says that the book is meant to give such an account of the Private Life of the Romans in the later Republic and earlier Empire. The preface also says that the book is intended in the first place for seniors in high schools and freshmen in colleges.
The text describes the paenula as a heavy coarse wrap of wool, leather, or fur, used merely for protection against rain or cold. A garment is described as sometimes supplied with a hood, cucullus, which the wearer could pull over the head as a protection or a disguise. The inscription on the tomb of Plancus says that he celebrated a triumph over the people of Raetia and from the spoils of war erected a temple to Saturn.
