About this book
The Prolongation of Life carries the subtitle Optimistic Studies, and the editor's introduction presents biological inquiry as work directed toward the service of man. The discussion of old age says that old people very often end their lives prematurely, preferring death to material hardship or disease. The account of old people ending their own lives describes numerous statistics as establishing the frequency of such deaths and presents the cited facts as confirmation.
The discussion of diet reports that some centenarians described in a memoir lived chiefly on a milk diet. The argument about human nature expresses the hope that human capacities may permit people to modify their own nature and transform disharmonies into harmonies. The text assigns the attainment of that ideal exclusively to human will.
