About this book
The title page names Cyril Bailey as the author of The Religion of Ancient Rome. The contents list gives, among others, chapters called Worship of the Household, Worship of the Fields and Worship of the State. The text says of the flamen Dialis, the priest of Iuppiter, that he must appear always in festival garb and that fire may never be taken from his hearth but for sacred purposes.
One passage speaks of the sacredness which attaches to the person of the priest-king, so that his every act or word may have a magic significance or effect. The text describes the Di Manes, not the deified spirits of the dead, but peaceful and on the whole kindly divinities holding sway in the world of dead spirits. The text says the worshipper might be wholly ignorant of the character, even the name of the deity he worshipped, and in any case the motive of his action was naught, the act itself everything.
