About this book

The Romance of the Forest, Interspersed with Some Pieces of Poetry describes half-demolished ivy-covered battlements inhabited by birds of prey. La Motte advances to the gate because he thinks the building might still shelter a human being, and lifts its heavy knocker. La Motte enters what appears to have been the abbey's chapel and pauses with sublimity rising into terror, astonishment and awe.

Adeline expresses a wish for a more able surgeon and asks whether a nearby town might provide other advice. Adeline arrives at Paris chiefly supported by the attentions of Louis, whom she pities and esteems but cannot love.

Ann Ward Radcliffe - BDeBooks
Ann Ward Radcliffe

Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) was an English author who did more than anyone to popularise the Gothic novel. Reclusive and admired, she pioneered the 'explained supernatural,' pairing atmospheric dread with heroines of sense and sensibility, and influenced writers from Austen to Poe.
