About this book
The Romance of the Harem is by Anna Harriette Leonowens. The preface says that most of the stories, incidents, and characters are known to its writer personally to be real. The text describes Buddhism as having its priests and nuns, separated from the world, and vowed to poverty, celibacy, and the study of the Divine law.
The text says that the sermons preached daily in the immense temples have as their chief themes humanity, endurance, patience, submission. Among the practical precepts listed are "Love your enemies" and "Sacrifice your life for truth." The text states that the severest punishment for slaves is being made to work in chains.
