Cosmo Hamilton’s 1922 novel traces the rise of Lola Breezy, a bright young woman from a modest London household whose beauty and nerve carry her well beyond the world she was born into. Drawn toward Arthur Fallaray, an aloof and powerful figure in British politics, she takes a place in his household, where private longing collides with public duty and rigid class lines. The story moves through the drawing rooms and back streets of postwar London, weighing ambition against affection and asking what a woman may risk to be seen and to matter. Hamilton wrote for a wide popular readership, and the book shows his ear for social manners and romantic tension. It caught the mood of its decade well enough to be filmed in 1923 by Herbert Brenon.
