The Sable Cloud is a religious and political work by Nehemiah Adams (1806-1878), the American Congregationalist minister, published in 1861. The book belongs to the controversial side of Adams’s literary career and continues the broader discussion of American slavery that his earlier A South-Side View of Slavery of 1854 had opened.

Adams had taken a New England trip to the American South in 1854 and produced A South-Side View as a sympathetic account of how slavery actually operated in the Southern states. The book argued that the reality of Southern slavery was less harsh than the Northern abolitionist literature claimed and that gradual reform within the existing system was preferable to abolitionist agitation. The book provoked substantial criticism from Northern abolitionists who considered Adams’s position fundamentally compromised with slavery.

The Sable Cloud continues this argument into the immediate pre-Civil War period and addresses the deepening sectional crisis of the late 1850s and early 1860s. The book is mostly of interest now as a primary document of moderate Northern attitudes toward Southern slavery in the years immediately before the Civil War.
