The Second Sex (Le Deuxième Sexe) is a book by the French existentialist philosopher Simone de Beauvoir, published in 1949. It examines how women are treated in society and how that treatment has developed through history, myth and everyday life. Beauvoir researched and wrote it in about fourteen months, between 1946 and 1949.

It appeared in two volumes, Facts and Myths and Lived Experience, and some chapters were first printed in the journal Les Temps modernes. It is one of her best-known and most debated works, and the Vatican placed it on its list of banned books. It is widely regarded as a founding text of modern feminist thought.

Simone Lucie Ernestine Marie Bertrand de Beauvoir was a French existentialist philosopher, writer, social theorist, and feminist activist. Though she did not consider herself a philosopher, nor was she considered one at the time of her death, she had a significant influence on both feminist existentialism and feminist theory.
