A gathering of short fiction by Vladimir Korolenko, one of late-imperial Russia's most humane storytellers. The collection ranges across Siberian exile, peasant life, and the country's poor and dispossessed, drawn in part from the years the author himself spent under arrest and banishment. Vladimir Korolenko

Vladimir Korolenko (1853-1921) was a Russian and Ukrainian writer, journalist, and human rights campaigner. Exiled to Siberia for his politics, he drew on those years in fiction and reportage marked by compassion for the poor and the persecuted, and he later defended victims of injustice across the empire.
