About this book

Set across a single grey day on a failing farm in England's northern hills, Constance Holme's 1919 novel watches Simon and Sarah Thornthwaite, an old couple worn down by decades of small defeats and one long-carried grief. Word arrives that may change everything, and the story turns on how two people who have shared a hard life absorb hope, loss, and each other. Holme wrote out of the Westmorland country she knew intimately, and she gives its weather, work, and speech a weight that lifts an outwardly quiet tale close to tragedy. The book won the Prix Femina Vie Heureuse and stands among her finest. Free PDF and EPUB editions are available here.
