About this book
The Stock-Feeder's Manual is about the chemistry of food in relation to the breeding and feeding of live stock, by Charles A. Cameron. A prize yearling short-horn bull, Victor Emmanuel, the property of Lord Talbot de Malahide, was awarded the First Prize in his Section at the Show of the Royal Agricultural Society, held at Belfast, in August, 1861. A return lists horned cattle exported from the several Irish ports at which veterinary inspectors have been appointed.
Part I is headed On the Growth and Composition of Animals, and Section I is headed Animal and Vegetable Life. The author says it is the primary function of plants to convert the inorganic matter of the soil and air into organised structures of a highly complex nature. The weight of meat annually supplied from a given area of land is said to be from 80 to 100 per cent. greater than it furnished thirty or forty years ago. The author credits the so-called forcing system chiefly with the increase in the produce of meat.
