About this book

On an Atlantic crossing, Cynthia Mortimer starts a conversation with a reserved stranger whom she takes for a detective. She admits that Nat Verney has cheated her of five hundred dollars, yet hopes he will escape justice. Her more immediate concern is her cousin Archie, whose reckless card playing is draining his money. She asks West to keep an eye on him, placing her confidence in a man whose replies give little away.

Ethel M. Dell's collection brings together ten stories originally published in the Red Magazine. Elsewhere, a doctor attending a feverish soldier hears memories of a damaged friendship and an appeal for forgiveness. The excerpts put trust under pressure, whether through financial recklessness or old personal grievances. Readers interested in short fiction about loyalty and uncertain motives will find conversations that make the characters' judgments, sympathies and hidden feelings part of the suspense.
