Peter Rabbit lost his jacket and shoes in Mr. McGregor’s garden, and his cousin Benjamin sees no reason to leave perfectly good clothes on a scarecrow. So the pair go back over the wall, Benjamin brisk and confident, Peter flinching at every sound, and the retrieval goes about as well as you would expect once a cat sits down on the basket they are hiding under and stays there. Potter published this in 1904 as a follow-up to The Tale of Peter Rabbit, and it is the funnier book, largely thanks to old Mr. Bouncer, who arrives with a switch and settles the whole business in a page.
