The Temple of Nature

Published in 1803, a year after its author’s death, this long poem in heroic couplets offers a bold account of how life and human society came to be. Across four cantos, the Muse Urania presides while a Priestess of Nature draws back a veil to trace living things from microscopic specks in a primeval sea up through plants, animals, and at last humankind and civilization. Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles, presents the whole progression as a slow unfolding governed by natural law, and he anchors the verse with dense philosophical footnotes on geology, reproduction, and the growth of mind. It stands among the earliest sustained attempts to set a theory of evolution into English poetry. Read it as both scientific speculation and Enlightenment art.
