About this book
Linked stories about American soldiers in Vietnam, drawn from Tim O'Brien's own service as a soldier. The title story opens with First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, who keeps letters from a girl named Martha at the bottom of his rucksack and hopes she will return his love.
It then lists what the men carry, from canned peaches to dental floss.
