The Thrall of Leif the Lucky is a historical novel by Ottilie Adelina Liljencrantz (1876-1910), first published in 1902. The book was the first of Liljencrantz’s Viking-era novels and helped establish her reputation as one of the leading early twentieth century American writers of historical fiction set in medieval Scandinavia.

The novel takes the Norse exploration of North America around the year 1000 as its setting. Leif the Lucky, the Norse name for Leif Erikson, the Icelandic explorer who led the first known European expedition to North America from his Greenland base around 1000 AD, provides the historical anchor. The thrall of the title is an enslaved young man whose experiences during Leif’s expedition to Vinland form the central plot.

Liljencrantz drew on the Vinland sagas, particularly the Saga of Erik the Red and the Saga of the Greenlanders, for the historical material. The Norse North American expedition material had become considerable better known to English language readers in the late nineteenth century as Scandinavian and American scholars had begun serious work on the saga sources.
