About this book

Plymouth harbour supplies the busy opening scene for Frederick Marryat's comic sea story, with dockyards, anchored ships and an elegant yacht in view. Aboard that yacht, a wealthy lord entertains guests whose habits give the narrator plenty to mock. Mr Ossulton imitates a sailor while struggling with his cigar, Miss Ossulton fears every sound, and Cecilia meets the outing with confidence. Polished brass, carefully arranged cabins and an elaborate dinner establish the comforts of this floating social circle.

Those comforts meet a different kind of seamanship when the smuggler Pickersgill turns the yacht party's interference to his advantage. Fog, signals and a shortage of hands shape his plan to use their vessel for his cargo. The Three Cutters combines nautical manoeuvres with social comedy, offering readers both the workings of small sailing craft and the awkward encounters between fashionable passengers and practical seamen.
