About this book

Nine-year-old Odo Valsecca finds comfort in the painted saints of a neglected chapel at Pontesordo, an old Italian manor now used as a farmhouse. His noble connections sit uneasily beside ragged clothes, coarse food and the harsh treatment he receives from his foster family. Edith Wharton's historical novel opens in eighteenth-century Italy, where the boy turns religious pictures into imagined companions and gives the figures the identities of people in his own life.

The wider world brings the pressures of court and political reform into this intimate account of childhood. In a later scene, Odo worries about reformers at Pianura, receives a warning in Gamba's handwriting and attends a strange spectacle before the ducal household. Rural hardship, palace ceremony and religious feeling give readers several ways into the story. Published in 1902, it offers a study of how inherited rank and personal sympathy meet within an unequal society.
