About this book

In the cathedral town of Barchester, Reverend Septimus Harding lives with his daughter Eleanor and divides his duties between sacred music and the care of Hiram’s Hospital. The hospital’s founder intended its endowment to support twelve elderly wool-carders. As the town has grown, its estates have become valuable housing, increasing the warden’s income while the residents receive a small daily allowance.

Harding responds to murmurs about this division by adding money from his own purse to each resident’s payment. His son-in-law, Archdeacon Grantly, objects to that generosity and takes a firmer view of the church’s interests. In this novel, questions of charity and entitlement unsettle the comfortable life around the hospital’s riverside grounds and the cathedral’s family circles. Harding’s sense of fairness meets the claims of an institution whose property, income, and authority have become subjects of public argument.
