The Windfairies
Published in 1900 near the end of her writing life, this was Mary De Morgan’s third and final collection of fairy tales. The title story follows Lucilla, a girl who dances with the fairies of the wind and carries that gift through the joys and losses of an ordinary life. Around it gather more of the original tales De Morgan was known for, stories that prize loyalty and courage while refusing to pretend the world is always kind. Written in her clear, unhurried style and first issued with illustrations by Olive Cockerell, the book is a fitting close to the work of one of the Victorian era’s most inventive fairy-tale writers.
