The Wonders of the Jungle, Book One

First published in 1915 by D. C. Heath as part of its Supplementary Readers series, this illustrated volume introduces the animals of the Indian jungle to children in the early grammar grades. Ghosh works by narrative rather than lesson: a night at the midnight pool where everything comes to drink, elephants at their bath and at their tricks, the buffalo herds he calls the knights of the jungle, deer and antelope and their special gifts, the camel, bears, bright birds, and a parrot in its cage. Sixteen short chapters, each built on an observed habit and each carrying a plain moral, obedience and good citizenship among them. Beasts of prey are left out on purpose; the preface promises those in a later book for older readers.
