About this book
The World's Earliest Music by Hermann Smith is traced to its beginnings in ancient lands by collected evidence of relics, records, history, and musical instruments from Greece, Etruria, Egypt, China, through Assyria and Babylonia, to the primitive home, the land of Akkad and Sumer. The writer says Pythagoras states that the intervals in music are rather to be judged intellectually, through numbers, than sensibly through the ear.
The writer says his long tarrying with the musical instruments of Celestials has tended to bring very forcibly before him the great resemblance between the Chinese and the Greek systems of music. The writer says the tale told of the twelve lüs bears every evidence of being an invention. The text says Didymus shewed that the stricter mathematical division (not by fifths) required a lesser or minor tone in place of one major.
