A rich Athenian nobleman lavishes gifts and banquets on a crowd of flatterers, certain that generosity will always be repaid in kind. When his fortune collapses, though, not one of the friends he bankrolled will lend him a coin. Wounded past reason, Timon abandons the city for a cave in the woods, digging for roots and cursing all of humankind, only to unearth a hoard of gold he no longer wants.
