Thomas Hughes drew on his own years at Rugby to create the boy who became the template for every school story that followed. Tom arrives at Rugby in the 1830s a cheerful, scrappy newcomer and works his way through fistfights, the casual cruelty of the bully Flashman, cricket matches, and the steadying friendship of the frail, devout young George Arthur. Under the real headmaster Dr. Arnold, whom Hughes revered, Tom grows from a reckless boy into a young man with a conscience. The book helped fix the Victorian ideal of muscular Christianity, with its emphasis on decency, courage, and fair play, and it carried Rugby’s name far beyond England.
