About this book

The book is titled Travels and adventures in South and Central America. First series. A verse in the book speaks of a land where brightest hues gild sunset skies and glow in morning dews. The text says that two species of cattleya are here called Flor de Mayo, or Mayflower, because it blossoms principally in the month of May.

The raiz de mato includes several varieties of Aristolochias with intensely bitter roots, and it is said to afford the mato, a large species of lizard, a prompt antidote against the bite of his old antagonist, the snake. A passage on turtles says that the little tracks on the water are called the Siriri, and that the instant one was perceived an arrow flew from the bow of the nearest man.
