About this book
From her bed in a cramped room above a narrow, dirty street, Molly watches birds and invents stories about them. A caged mockingbird seems especially close to her own condition: both are confined while the world outside remains out of reach. The girl cannot walk, and her days depend on Mrs. O'Meath, whose drinking leaves her hungry and whose demands keep her sewing. Fragments of two books feed Molly's imagination and her hopes of another life.
Thomas Nelson Page brings this lonely child into contact with Mildred through Roy, a dog both girls regard as their own. Mildred's visit reveals how differently they live, especially when she discovers that Molly has missed breakfast. Their conversation turns sympathy into small, immediate acts of generosity. This children's story offers a direct account of poverty, disability and friendship, with the bird and the dog giving its human concerns a concrete form.
