About this book
“Up from Slavery” is a 1901 autobiographical work by Booker T. Washington. It narrates his life, starting from his childhood as a slave during the Civil War to his rise as a distinguished educator. Despite numerous obstacles, he managed to receive an education at the Hampton Institute and went on to found vocational schools like the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.
The book underscores the significance of practical skills and education for African Americans and other marginalized communities. Initially serialized in The Outlook, a New York-based Christian newspaper, the book faced criticism but eventually became a best-seller and is now considered a crucial piece of African-American autobiography.
