About this book
Vaninka, by Alexandre Dumas, is taken from the set of Eight Volumes of Celebrated Crimes, 1910. A crowd gathers in front of a house which belonged to General Count Tchermayloff, drawn by preparations in the courtyard for the knout, and one of the general’s serfs, he who acted as barber, is to be the victim. Ivan, approaching to remove the striped shirt that covered his friend’s shoulders, takes the opportunity to whisper under his breath, Come, Gregory, take courage.
Vaninka holds out her hand to the young officer, who kisses it passionately, and tells him to be hopeful and take courage; the same day Foedor asks for an interview with the general. Annouschka asks to go home quickly, but Vaninka holds her back and says to stay until the house falls in on them, so that they may be certain that not one of them escapes.
