About this book

Washington and His Comrades in Arms, with the subtitle A Chronicle of the War of Independence, is by George McKinnon Wrong. The prefatory note says the author is aware of a certain audacity in undertaking, himself a Briton, to appear in a company of American writers on American history and above all to write on the subject of Washington. The text says that in early life Washington had had very little of formal education and knew no language but English.

The text says the men carried weapons some of which, at any rate in the early days of the war, were made by hand at the village smithy. The text says the American soldier had an advantage over the British soldier in that he used, if not generally, at least in some cases, not the smooth-bore musket but the grooved rifle, and that the fire from this rifle was extremely accurate. The text also has a list of entries naming, among others, Dorchester Heights (MA), where American troops are noted, and Dunmore, Lord, Governor of Virginia.
