About this book
Washington the Soldier, by Henry B. Carrington, is presented with illustrations, maps, a chronological index and appendices. The account of the siege describes operations directed mainly at silencing British action and wearing out the garrison through constant surveillance and provocations to fight. The description of restrictions on royalists says those in the city could not visit friends or attend to their property outside the British lines.
The account names Governor Blackstone, Cornplanter and Halftown as a trio who made a treaty with Washington and were known as his friends. A silver medal presented to Governor Blackstone bore an inscription naming George Washington's second presidency and was long esteemed as a precious relic.
