About this book
Waterloo, by Erckmann-Chatrian, is subtitled "A Sequel to The Conscript of 1813" and is marked "TRANSLATED FROM THE FRENCH OF ERCKMANN-CHATRIAN". An introductory note says that, although the campaign of Waterloo has often been described by historians, it "has rarely been narrated from the stand-point of a private soldier participating in it and telling only what he saw". The narrator writes that "we were to witness the return of the émigrés from the heart of Germany and from Russia", the ladies in "dresses with immense flower patterns" and the men in "the old French coats and short breeches". The returning travellers all stop at the "Red Ox", "the hotel of the old ambassadors and marshals and princes and dukes and rich people".
The narrator says Jean Buche, "who had never seen any other town than Pfalzbourg", "did not leave me for a moment". At a distribution, "each man received twenty-five sous and a ticket for lodging". Buche says "We have been betrayed. The traitors revealed our plans." and asks "How was it possible for us not to lose, under such circumstances?"
