Around her move the "new people," idealists who live by reason and useful labor, among them the iron-willed ascetic revolutionary Rakhmetov. Awkward as fiction but electric as propaganda, the book inspired everyone from the Populists to Lenin, who borrowed its title for his own pamphlet decades later. Nikolay Chernyshevsky

Nikolay Chernyshevsky (1828-1889) was a Russian writer, philosopher, and revolutionary democrat, a leading voice of the radical intelligentsia of the 1860s. Imprisoned for his politics, he wrote his famous novel in a fortress cell, and his ideas shaped Russian revolutionaries for generations afterward.
