About this book

A telephone call from London unsettles the Tosswill household in Beechfield, Surrey. Godfrey Radmore, now wealthy after years in Australia, wants to visit Old Place, where his broken engagement to Betty still troubles Janet Tosswill. The family has also lived through the war and the loss of Betty's twin brother. In this village mystery, the prospect of a reunion brings old loyalties and grievances into everyday conversation.

Another arrival, Mrs. Crofton at The Trellis House, becomes the subject of gossip and disagreements over hospitality. Rosamund admires her, Jack runs errands for her, and Janet weighs the family's obligations. Timmy, devoted to his dog Flick, adds an odd note when he seems to know exactly where Jack is before his mother looks outside. Readers interested in domestic suspense will find tension in small social gestures, guarded exchanges, and the uneasy business of deciding whom to trust.
