About this book

At Hope Springs Sanatorium, remembering a guest's name and preferred glass of mineral water can be as valuable as any treatment. Minnie, who has tended the spring-house for fourteen years, tells the story with a sharp eye for vanity, business and bad behavior. The old doctor's death marks the beginning of the trouble, while newspaper reports about Patty Jennings and a prince give the resort's daily gossip a wider reach.

Mary Roberts Rinehart turns the routines of a health resort into a comedy of personalities and strained relationships. Minnie's practical concerns sit beside Mr. Pierce's anger and Mr. von Inwald's amused recollection of an earlier insult. When their quarrel threatens to spill over, she intervenes by claiming a glass needs washing. Her brisk first-person voice gives readers the pleasures of social comedy, with romantic complications and mystery woven into the resort setting.
