In March 1770, near the Pont du Gard in southern France, a gypsy woman flees her tribe with her infant daughter and collapses at the door of the Château de Chamondrin, where she dies. The Marquis de Chamondrin takes in the orphaned girl, Dolores, and raises her beside his own son, Philip. Ernest Daudet, a historian of the period, sets this romance against France’s slide into revolution, carrying the family from a quiet provincial château to the peril of Paris under the Terror. The title asks which of the two women Philip will finally choose.
