William Ewart Gladstone is a biographical sketch by James Bryce, Viscount Bryce (1838-1922), the British Liberal politician, historian, jurist, and diplomat who served as British Ambassador to the United States from 1907 to 1913 and produced the classic two-volume study The American Commonwealth. Bryce was a junior colleague of Gladstone in the Liberal Party and held office under him as Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs and later as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. The sketch combines first-hand recollection with critical assessment of the four-time Liberal Prime Minister’s career, his Home Rule campaign for Ireland, his religious convictions, and his place in nineteenth-century British politics. The piece is a primary source on Gladstone’s circle. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
