About this book

Three school friends begin their freshman year at Winthrop College with different habits and expectations. Will Phelps is sociable and impulsive, while his roommate Foster Bennett brings a steadier approach to work. Their friend Peter John asks them to meet his train, worried by stories about the sophomores. Everett T. Tomlinson builds the opening around the boys' preparations for college, their friendship and the uncertainty of managing a new life away from home.

Student pranks and athletic interests share space with the less exciting demands of study. When Will seeks help with Greek, he explains that hours of effort have brought little progress. His professor answers with a lengthy recollection of a former pupil, and Will's playful questions give the conversation its humor. Readers of college fiction can find familiar concerns here: fitting in, relying on friends and learning how to turn good intentions into useful habits.
