About this book
Women's freedom of thought and action gives Margaret Fuller's collected writings their common purpose. Alongside the main essay, this volume brings together related papers, private writings and letters selected by her brother, Arthur B. Fuller. His preface presents her as an independent reformer whose opinions grew from her own judgment and experience. It also describes her care for younger relatives and argues that intellectual work need not prevent attention to family duties.
The discussion moves between public restrictions and the pressures of private life. In one dialogue, a woman trapped in an unhappy marriage weighs her wish for a different future against the claims of family, duty and social approval. Her account puts personal feeling beside the rules that govern it. Readers interested in the history of women's rights will find arguments about individual freedom expressed through essays, reflection and the difficult choices of ordinary relationships.
