The Man in the Iron Mask Bangla Onubad Book

The Man in the Iron Mask, available here in Bengali translation, is the final volume of Alexandre Dumas’s great d’Artagnan trilogy that began with The Three Musketeers and continued through Twenty Years After. By this point in the saga, the original four musketeers — d’Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis — are old men, and the political world they once defended has hardened around them.

The novel’s most famous element is, of course, the iron mask itself: a prisoner held for years in solitary confinement, his face hidden, his identity a state secret. Dumas built the book on the long-disputed historical mystery of an actual masked prisoner held in seventeenth-century France, and he provides his own elaborate fictional answer.

What gives the novel its weight, though, is the friendship at its centre. The musketeers no longer agree on how to live; politics has divided them; and yet the bond holds. The translation gives Bengali readers access to one of the great adventure novels of the nineteenth century.
