Nabanna

Nabanna is Bijon Bhattacharya’s famous play about the Bengal famine of 1943, when millions died in a man made tragedy that still scars the region’s memory. The play follows a peasant family whose lives are slowly destroyed by hunger.

It was first staged in 1944 by the Indian People’s Theatre Association and changed Bengali drama for good. Even reading it, you can feel why audiences at the time were shaken.
