Pather Dabi is Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s most political novel, written in 1926 and immediately banned by the British government for its sympathies with the independence movement. It follows a young Bengali revolutionary working underground in Burma.
Sarat Chandra is best known for romance and family drama, so this book often surprises new readers. It shows another side of him entirely, and it remains one of the most readable nationalist novels in any Indian language.
