Prajapati is Samaresh Basu’s most controversial novel, the one that landed him in court on obscenity charges and that took years to be cleared. The book is short, sharp, and angry, told through the eyes of a young man with no future in late sixties Calcutta.

It is not an easy read but it is an honest one. Samaresh Basu wanted to show a side of the city that polite Bengali fiction did not usually look at, and he did.
